A Street in Casco Viejo in Panama

Walking along a street in the Casco Viejo area of Panama City, Panama

Walking along a street in the Casco Viejo area of Panama City, Panama, during our 2024 Panama Trip.

At the end of our week in Panama, our group took a day to see some of the sights. After visiting the Panama Canal and Panama Viejo, we went to the area known as Casco Viejo.

While Panama Viejo was the first Panama City, Casco Viejo was the second. Its name means “Old Town”, by the way. After a few fires, this version of Casco Viejo was built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This area is also known as Casco Antiguo, which means “Old Quarter”. And it did have a very similar feel to the French Quarter of New Orleans.

It was quite interesting to see all of the old buildings. We went in several of the shops, along with some of the church buildings (including the Metropolitan Cathedral from an earlier post), and even stopped in a small cafe for an ice-cold Coca-Cola. Despite the rain showers, it was a fun afternoon!

Historic Blessings

I like old things and learning about the past. I like visiting historic places and seeing where events happened.

I also like our family history, knowing what my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents did. We are very blessed because of the things that they did and the lives that they have lived. And we are especially blessed because of the Christian examples that they set for us to follow. They paved the way for us in so many different ways, and I am thankful for that.

And I hope that future generations can say that about us, too. Not so that we get any credit for doing anything great, but so that they can say that they saw God through the things that we did. That is the best kind of legacy to leave.

We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. - Psalm 78:4 ESV

About the Photo

This photo has a dark, moody feel to it. I could have lightened it up some, but I chose this look on purpose. It was raining when we arrived, and the showers lingered much of the time that we were there, along with some thick clouds. So in person, it also looked dark and moody like this during our visit. I think this photo captures the feel of what we saw very well.

And if you wonder if this is really Panama, just check the store window at the left for the Panama Hat on display. Every store had them, because why wouldn’t you expect to find a Panama Hat in Panama?
