Beach Sunset in Hawaii

The sun sets over the Ko Olina Lagoons near the Disney resort of Aulani on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi during our 2023 Hawaiʻi Trip.

When I was compiling photos for the trip report, I purposefully left out some of the sunset photos that I had taken. If you have already read the report, you know that there were lots of sunset photos in the report. But I took lots more photos than I could include in the report, so I thought it would be a good idea to share some of them from time to time, because the photos can definitely stand on their own.

And after posting some winter snow photos, a nice, warm Hawaiʻi sunset photo seems like the perfect follow-up. Something to warm the heart and memories after all of that cold. And fortunately, it did warm up at home after all of that snow, too, in case you were wondering.

That Warm Feeling

I would guess that when you looked at the photo above, you got a nice, warm feeling, especially if you looked at the photo on a cold day. There is something about that scene that warms you on the inside. Perhaps that comes from memories of warm days on the beach, or just warm days looking at the sunset. Yes, sunsets happen on cold days, and yes, there are cold days at the beach, too, depending on where the beach is. But we typically associate views like the above with warmth.

Maybe there are other things that you think of that give you that warm feeling, too. Certain situations, places you have been, experiences that you have had. And perhaps people, too. Remembering a kind word, a good deed, a laugh shared, or just how someone makes you happy can give you that warm feeling, too.

Do people have those happy thoughts when they think of you? I sometimes wonder what people think of me, or if they think of me at all. I hope their thoughts are good.

If we live our lives loving others, then we will inspire those warm thoughts in others. Maybe not in everyone, but definitely in someone. And perhaps it will inspire them to live their lives in such a way so as to inspire that warmth in others, too. And it will keep going from there.

If we just share love with those that are around us, it can spread to so many more people.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” - John 13:34-35

Love One Another

About the Photo

For this photo, I used two “exposures” of the same Raw file. In other words, I made a lighter version and saved it as a JPG, and then I made a darker version and saved it as a JPG. I then loaded the darker version as a separate layer on top of the lighter version with a layer mask so that none of the darker version was visible. Next, I used a white brush on the black layer mask to brush in the parts of the darker photo that I wanted, which was mainly the sky. It took a few tweaks to get it like I wanted it. That takes a little time, but it helps the photo to stand out even more.

Photo: A single Raw exposure, processed in Raw Therapee and GIMP.
Camera: Sony Alpha A7 II
Lens: Rokinon 35mm f/1.8
