Aulani Makaala at Night

A nighttime view of the Makaʻala, or main lobby area, of the Disney resort of Aulani on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi, from our 2023 Hawaiʻi trip.

As you may recall if you read part 7 of the trip report, Laura and I had an evening excursion around Aulani to take some nighttime photos. I shared a couple of those photos, but I still have some that I have not shared previously, and this is one of them.

The word “makaʻala” means “to open your eyes” in the Hawaiian language. That part of Aulani, the part that you first see when you arrive, is meant to open your eyes to what is ahead of you.

I enjoyed the architecture around Aulani, perhaps because it is unlike most anywhere that we have been before. And with the right lighting, places take on a unique look at night, so I was happy to have the chance to take some nighttime Aulani photos such as this.1

Hawaii Trip 2023

Love and Marriage

As you might know, this trip to Hawaiʻi was for our 30th wedding anniversary, as well as for the Riedels’ 30th anniversary. And as long-time readers might remember, on a different trip for our 25th anniversary, Laura and I were told good-naturedly, “Wow, you are like dinosaurs! No one stays married that long anymore!”

But the truth is that some people do stay married that long or longer. And the way that happens is that the husband and wife love each other. When you love your spouse, that makes everything better. Yes, you still have difficulties at times, but those difficulties are better when you have someone to share them with. And the good times are better, too, obviously. But love helps you through the difficult times, and you grow stronger together.

Note that I said, “When you love your spouse.” Yes, it is better when your spouse loves you, too, and hopefully that is the case. But when it comes right down to it, you cannot make your spouse love you. You can only make yourself love your spouse. If you do that in the right way, your spouse will love you back, but you have to do your part first.

These days, people do not often like to hear the Bible verse saying that wives should submit to their husbands. But a few verses later, the apostle Paul also says that husbands should love their wives as Christ loved the church. And as you may know, Christ loved the church enough to give his life for it. In many ways, that is even stronger than just submitting. So the husband has just as much responsibility in the marriage as the wife does.

Successful marriages come from both spouses loving one another. It takes work from both sides, but the end result is definitely worth it.

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. - Ephesians 5:22-25

About the Photo

As you might guess, this was a long exposure photo, 10 seconds long in case you were wondering. This is partly evident in the motion of the tree branches at the left. No matter how hard I tried, I could not keep the breeze from blowing them around.2 I used the longer exposure to get as much light as possible, even though it was after 10:00 PM by this time.

And as you might guess, I used my tripod for this one. I was thankful to have a travel tripod that fit in my suitcase just for this occasion.

I enjoy the challenge of nighttime photography, but I do not have that many occasions to practice it. There does not seem to be anything interesting at our house to photograph at night. But maybe I should try anyway, just for more practice.

  1. Be forewarned: If you try such a thing, some people will look at you like you are strange. Some people will even say you are strange after they pass by you, thinking that you will not hear them. Do not pay them any attention, however. Just do your thing. ↩︎

  2. I did not try all that hard, because I knew it would be of no use. Hopefully, the moving branches are not too distracting. ↩︎
